Interesting article. Just to say though (I am the Research Manager for the Kiss Network) that this quarter just gone Kiss 100 achieved its highest ever market share amongst 15-24s. Also we've just back some results of an omnibus survey we had some questions on, one of which was 'compared to 5 years ago are you listening to more, less or the same amount of radio?' Amongst a UK sample of 16-19 year olds 50% said they were listening to more and 23% said the same. I think good radio still gets good results amongst young people.

Like the weather, it seems everybody complains about the adverts.

Personally, the adverts don't bother me.

Nonetheless, I would enjoy more amusing adverts. I don't think the station is responsible for writing the copy though.

Let's examine a couple of adverts as examples.

Anything from the taxing authorities always has a "big brother is watching you" component. Presently, there is a bike tax one which I believe threatens castration or hanging in a public square for failure to comply.

The advert about wearing a condom played so often that I started to wear one while listening out of fear of infection.

Immodium is always a fav of mine. The last one wasn't as amusing as the previous one. I could spend the whole post w/suggestions for Immodium but I'll save it for another time.

Presently, I'm enjoying the advert for the Harley Medical Group concerning breast augmentation, so much so, that I'm considering getting a breast augmentation. Howabout a competition for a breast augmentation?

Bottom line, I think the listeners would appreciate more creativity and humour in the adverts. I just don't think the station has any say in the copy for these adverts.

Perhaps, there can be a post explaining how the station secures an advert and what, if any, say the station has in creating the advert.

Thank you.

You have to ask why 16-24's aren't appearing in the figures and it is easy to blame the lack of coolness of DAB. That could be part of it but it's more a case of rethink. Go back to what the iPod Generation report said 4 years and that has some answers. To have stand-out against iPods etc radio has to offer something more than it does. It needs to fun, properly interactive and full of personality.

Radio cannot compete on music alone, especially in contemporary tracks. What radio needs to do is sell a feeling, a style, offer new music and a narrative use of the songs we already know. The day of a jock and a playlist is over. Radio needs production, presenters who love music and can entertain the audience... add this with new ways for the audience to interact and generate revenue then we might be ok. Oh yeah... and make the ads better, much better.

The problem I believe is that the Internet has given birth to a generation of 16-24's who demand immediacy when it comes to the ways in which they consume music - back in the day we were taught to forward promote and "tease" the playlist in order to keep the kids listening but nowadays if the kids want to hear a song - all they have to do is go online and get it themselves!

The key is that radio stations now have to evolve and deliver content that isn't readily available via itunes and other music/entertainment sites - for far too long, radio stations have relayed entertainment content from other sources rather than creating it.

Time to be innovative me'thinks.

I only download after I listen to it. And I first listen to it, more often than not, on the radio, whether local (in Manila, Philippines, where I live) or foreign (London stuff, wheee).

So, perhaps, it's the measurement...
