Advertising by Paul Flower and Clare Baker

In the crazy world of brand marketing, it’s never less than a laugh a minute. Unfortunately our TV ads are generally a lot shorter than that. Those who’ve been with us for a while (as staff or listeners) will be aware of our infrequent forays into the murky waters of TV advertising and whilst our budgets were small, our (ahem) creativity was never lacking.

Those who remember Pete & Geoff as eggs (because everyone eats an egg at breakfast, don’t they?) will not have been surprised to see the food idea has been something of a constant. We do, occasionally, pander to the whims of our presenters though. I have the privilege of sharing this previously unseen gem with you:

I can’t recall if this was Russ or Jono’s fantasy idea or whether it was the agency who suggested a psycho shower scene, either way it seems not to matter much now as it was never shown to a large audience and never will be……….er, damn!

Hands up those who remember this classic featuring one Beau the dog?

Note: hi-tech realistic paw action, and he types faster than anyone in programming.

And budgets must have been really tight the year we came up with this:

Fortunately for Russ, Christian and everyone else we are unlikely to be thinking in this direction for the new ad, and we even have a bigger budget to play with. Now, where did I put those banana costumes?

On that last one, budgets must have been tight indeed: If I’m not mistaken, the voice at the end belongs to erstwhile programme director, Henry Owens.

Why limit your new adverts to banana costumes? Live dangerousy….pineapple costumes.

By the way, if I watch the last one often enough, I believe I can induce an epileptic fit. Then, I could probably leave early from work. Thank you for that.

    Bring back Beau! ;-)

Bananas? Bananas? Wheeeee. That’s gotta be one of the funniest I’ve seen.

And what about “tune in, or next time he’s naked!”

Julia – it’s the one advert in the archive that I’m missing. If anybody’s got a copy of it, we’d love to see it.

I believe it features “Joey Bag O Donuts” – a large American DJ – dancing to some music with the voiceover finishing “Listen now or next time he’s naked.” It attracted 45 complaints to the Independent Television Commission alleging that the ad denigrated obese people “portraying them as disgusting and unsightly, and giving the impression that it was acceptable to see them as figures of fun.”

There’s a US ad featuring the same guy:

I think the advert was probably eaten by one of the 45 people who complained.

So what happened about those complaints, Adam? Was the ad eventually pulled off the air?

There’s another one with Beau the dog that you’ve not added to your Big You Tube Trawl.

Called “Dirty Weekend”, I appear to remember writing the “behind the new TV ad” pages for it on the website… and I think we-cough-you even got the rights to put it online.

It was promoting the Steve Penk Breakfast Show, and ended up showing Beau being a jolly unfaithful dog indeed, with three different lovers in less than 30 seconds. I was lucky enough to go to the filming of it, out at Elstree Studios.

Well, I say, lucky… it is actually really rather dull watching a TV ad being recorded.

Beau the dog is quite a nice dog. Though he smelt a bit.

Dont forget probably the best series of ads from c1998. These showed funny moments from the chris evans breakfast show team filmed in the studio. There were a few, but one of these was to Robbie Williams’ Strong. Russ did the voice over of course.
