A bit of an annual tradition here at Golden Square is that we all go to Green Park, our nearest park, for some pleasant summer drinks. We call this “Piss Up in the Park.”
You might remember your local radio station used to have a regular summer event called “Party in the Park” which was created by our very own Clive Dickens. They were big outdoor concerts with lots of bands of the day playing their hits on stage to an audience of thousands. The tickets were very hot property, and the stations’ would give thousands away, with profits going to the Prince’s Trust. They took place in London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Leeds amongst others.
“Piss Up in the Park” is exactly like this… except that we don’t have any live music, or an audience. No tickets were given away on air, and most of cash raised went towards buying food and, mostly, drink.
In other words it’s just a picnic where we socialise, drink a bit (always responsibly) and play a game that’s a little bit like softball but with looser rules.
But someone always has to go that little bit too far.
I don’t know about you, but before Wayne Rooney and David Beckham had broken their metatarsals, I’d not heard of that particular bone in the foot, and wasn’t aware how easily it could be damaged. I’d put down its relatively new popularity to the lightness of modern football boots. But now I’m not so sure.
Last year, Neil Stubbings from Digital Sales, broke his metatarsal playing softball. And wouldn’t you know it, Jody Hammersley, our Events Manager, managed to break hers too last Wednesday playing, it must be said, a very competitive game of softball. She only got back into work today, and here’s the pictorial evidence.
So let that be a warning to you. Softball is a much tougher game than you’d imagine.
