What others are saying, absolute

29/09/2008 - Day 1 at One Golden Square. By Mark Bingham

Wow, we have ended our ‘crossfade’ journey and it’s day two of being 100% Absolute Radio.

Behind the scenes, the Programming, Production, PR, Marketing, Digital Media and Tech Team have lived at One Golden Square, working day, night and most weekends to make sure we have everything perfect for day one. I feel like I’ve seen Clive Dickens, my new boss, more than my own wife and child for the last few weeks!

But the big question is, has it been worth it?

You bet it has, I wouldn’t have swapped it for the world. To be part of a new national radio station launch is a one in a million chance of a lifetime. If it all ends tomorrow for me, so be it, I was still part of the launch of Absolute Radio. I was there on day one.

But more importantly, do our listeners agree, do they like what’s coming out of the speakers? Have we kept our promise of keeping the things they like, but at the same time, sending them on an audio journey of discovery.

Here’s a selection of emails that we received from our listeners…

Seriously, it’s amazing.
I’m not going to bother with fancy letter-presentation techniques or long-winded intros, there really isn’t any point.
For once, there’s a radio station that plays decent music. No other radio station has played the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and so many other greats. I, as an oldie-rock lover, have finally found faith in radio again.
If you keep it this way, so, SO many people across the nation will be at your feet. As will many others, because what you’re doing now is *amazing*. (Excuse the poor quality of the vocabulary and the English in general)
So yes, good stuff, please don’t change it! :)

Having originally listened to Virgin at the start and drifted away as the music changed its focus, I’ve got to say what you have been playing in the last few hours has been brilliant. I’ve even downloaded some Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Queen having heard some long forgotten tracks. Keep it like this and I’ll be back for good
From: Simon Smith

Have been so worried that my virgin was going to disappear but if the last few broadcasts have anything to go by….oh thank god my ultimate station. although I have a vast music collection, now I don’t need to stick a cd in…thankyou . thankyouxxxx

Good Evening all at the new Absolute
Just finding the music exceptional and it’s great hearing all the great classics at work!
Would be great to hear more Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Human League,UB40 The list is endless as you are no doubt aware. Carry on the great work

We have the radio on all day at work ( Dentons Directories Westbury Wiltshire) and we all commented how much better it is now we don’t have to listen to the same record being played over and over and also having to listen to the same ads again and again…..the music is GREAT
From: Dawn Galey

just wanted to say always listened to VIRGIN ( i’m young 53!) but boy the music that has been played of late ( absolute) is great…all the quality tracks recently played from great artists never played queen, stones, LZ if this is what to come this is the station to listen to!
From: Linda

Hi,
I listened to Absolute for the first time yesterday whilst working from home, deperate for something to keep my mind on track as I cross checked spreadsheets. What a great mix of music, I have a vast range of musical taste (I was that 70’s punk) over far too many years and it was so good to hear an entertaining and (dare I say it) intelligent mix with NO repeats. To quote Paul Weller from yesterday’s playlist - That’s entertainment….

I look forward to listening again (sadly I can’t stream over the web at work here in France!). Thanks again
From: Jill

Thank God! A radio station I actually like that I can pick up on my DAB radio here in the wasteland otherwise known as the West Midlands!

You’re sounding great so far guys.

Just to let you know i don’t think i need my Ipod anymore. Absolute is fantastic.
From: Angela from Basingstoke

We only have one radio in our little hut and if I’m working in another room I find myself constantly running into the office because “I’m just going to listen to this one”. A lot of work is being neglected here, if our customers start complaining I’m going to refer them straight to Absolute Radio, you’re going to have a lot of explaining to do!
Keep it up guys! :O)

For the first time in my life, I’ve switched off the telly to listen to the radio. Absolutely better than Virgin.

When you have feedback like this from your listeners, you must be doing something right.
Here’s to many more great days of Absolute Radio.

  1. Marty from new yawk,

The increased range of the play list is much appreciated. It is a bit confusing to me as there are many tracks being played that I’m not familiar with. So, I’m getting an education. Thank you.

Now, how can I acquire some Absolute tat to refurnish my space in the accounting office?

Also, this may seem crazy (go figure?). Would it be possible to have life-size cardboard cut-outs of the presenters in the reception area of the station? This way people waiting can have photo opps with their favourite presenters.

  2. Erwin,

The moniker is: ‘discover real music’. But how can I discover real music as you play ‘the hits’ I have heard many, many times already? So more album tracks from classic artist and new artist would be great.
