Studio A Update by Stuart “Eddie” Edwards

We’ve been really busy planning the best options for Studio A since my last post about Studio A strategy, and we have settled on a two phase approach due to the tight timelines involved.

The first and current phase involves stripping the studio back to the plasterboard, renewing and adding additional soundproofing, building a production room next door and rotating the entire studio desk to face the new production room. We’re also giving Studio B a functional makeover, ready to be the new home of our award winning News Team.

The Technology Operations Team have been working really hard over the last few days to release up to seventy cables from the desk, along with all the equipment stored in it - and yes, we have finally managed to rotate it. I have to say that I have never seen Leona so excited!

We were so pleased with our progress that we thought you might like to see some pictures of the desk move, and the work by the contractors refitting the studio…

  1. Marty from new yawk,

I look forward to viewing the new and improved Studio A on the webcams. Wouldn’t it be great if the presenters could view the listeners on webcams? Maybe not all listeners?

  2. Mark O,

Know one has really explained the technical details too why your changing the equipment? Is there more computers to be added? Will you have an instant jukebox where you can get the listeners requests on straight away. Oh that be a good show Instant Jukebox, but probably been done to death on other stations?

Could someone help with my geeky question? Heeeee Heee Lol…..

  3. Chris Williams,

Looking good guys, Can’t wait for Absolute having heard about some of the new DJ’s who are joining. Geeky question alert, what playout system are you going to use?

  4. Dan R,

Keep that shifty Kiwi guy away from the equipment!

  5. Stuart 'Eddie' Edwards,

Just a quick response from me…

We’re not actually changing any of the equipment. It has been removed just so that we can work in there safely without damaging it, although it’s going to take us a fair while to get it all back in! With regards to an instant jukebox, we’ve had that functionality for years and years now, as the majority of our broadcast audio is stored in linear WAV files on a fairly large SAN in our technical area. This means that all the files are available within seconds with just a simple search.

We’ve used lots of different flavours of playout systems over the years, and have used Genesys (designed and written by Genesys Technologies in the USA and resold in the UK by Broadcast Bionics) since 2004. We’ll still be running with this as it’s working well for us - if it ain’t broke…

  6. Mark Occomore,

Like the new lick of paint
