G’mornin’ mi darlin’ by Guy Jogoo

It was back in January in studio A when David Lloyd first introduced myself and Tony Moorey to JK and Joel.

“This is Tony and Guy” he announced. (The new presenters were amused that their show was being produced by hairdressers).

After moving to The Midas for a swift half – which became a few pints in Joel’s case – we decided between the four of us that we had enough celebrity contacts to get some interviews booked.

So the likes of Timmy Mallett, Carol Vorderman, Ryan Giggs, Anne Robinson, Katie Price, David Seaman, an Irish comedian with an unpronouncable name, and that bird off Holby City all graced the JK & Joel Show. Not what you might call mega A listers, but nonetheless fantastic show guests.

Memories ? Dozens. Too many to write in one blog, but they include JK having his teeth brace fitted a couple of weeks before the show started and not being able to speak properly (or ‘shpeek’ as he would say)… our made up celebrity ‘Spotted’ feature… Joel spitting coffee all over me at the IOW festival (don’t ask, you had to be there)… almost jepordising JK’s relationship after playing Mr & Mrs live on air with Suzanne Shaw and her Dancing On Ice partner… and most of the time Joel seemed to spend taking his clothes off. Remember our 15th birthday party ? Then there was Richard Huntingford’s leaving video. Enough said about that the better I think…

And poor Andrew Bailey. Will he ever get over his Isle of Wight 2008 experience of ‘Naked Joel’. Maybe not. I for one will have that mental image of Joel in his birthday suit – except for a pair of green wellies – permanently etched in my brain. To make matters worse, they are my green wellies. I can never wear them again.

JK and Joel are indeed a rare breed. They compliment each other. JK with his family home, love of cars and ’24′ and Joel with his fantasy women, knowledge of C2 buses and love of Prisoner Cell Block H. They say opposites attract, and this is the proof.

Having been in this industry for 25 years, I can honestly say it’s been a real pleasure to work with two of the nicest guys around. They do their last shows this weekend, and I’d like to wish them all the best for the future.

Finally I’d like to end on a serious note.

To their next producer: don’t tangle up JK’s headphone lead, and Joel: you owe me a pair of green wellies.

Good luck in your future endeavors, JK & Joel. And Joel, I look forward to one day seeing you wrestle in a WWE match (maybe even a steel cage or a chamber of horrors or a last man standing or a no holds barred…)

Reading the news for these two lovely lads has been quite an experience. I agree 100% that they are two of the nicest people I have ever worked with.

Random pub sessions after early shifts, poledancing with JK, unending Radar Weather mockery, Top Gun soundtrack karaoke duets, newsroom invasions, ‘hilarious’ editions of the Spotted feature, and an unhealthy amount of Joel nakedness are just some of the memories I will treasure forever (I, too, suffered the same fate as Andrew Bailey at the Isle of Wight festival. I begin to shudder whenever I recall the agony of trying to get through a bulletin with Joel’s jewels swinging perilously close to my face).

Farewell boys – catch you later on down the trail…

    Marty,
You may remember me from a recent debate sparked by Greg Burns move away from Virgin Radio when it was called that of course!
When you expressed your dislike of him did it include talking over jungles and music too much? Cos he’s been doing alot of that just lately on Capital FM I’ve noticed!

This is a real shame. JK and Joel have ended up fitting the brilliant new Absolute format perfectly in my opinion.

What a shame that they are not staying on – unclear as to whether that is their decision or not?

Additionally, would anybody be kind enough to specify WHERE they will turn up next if that’s appropriate? Any radio gigs to reveal??

Good luck boys, will really miss your laid back, genuine style.

    Chris

    hi dan,

as someone else in the greg burns debate of a few weeks ago, i have to admit talking of songs i dont mind to much…i guess that’s because i like Chris Evans.

no Dan. That wasn’t one of my probs with him. He’s prob a funny guy in clubs as a stand-up. I’ve never seen him. But I think he needs to make the transition to bonafide presenter.

When I first heard JK and Joel were coming to the station my initial reaction was ‘oh my god, what ARE you doing, they’ll be rubbish!’. Thankfully I was proved wrong. Have loved spending the weekend mornings with them, laughing my way through the housework…will be sorely missed, big mistake letting them go! good luck guys and thank you for the entertainment :)

    Marty and Andy,

I agree with you about Greg Burns, but not about Chris Evans – not keen on him one bit I’m afraid!

Anyway, loving Rock’n'Roll football with Russ at the moment, its really grown on me and last weekend, he played as much new music (by that i mean within the last couple of years or so) as well as old, which was refreshing compared to previous saturdays. He even popped in some Duffy – not exactly rock’n'roll but great stuff anyway.

And Marty, am I imagining things or was somebody called “Marty From New York” on with Tim Shaw last saturday night? Cant have been u surely but i could have sworn that name got a mention! But i didnt listen for long – i prefer music to improvised talking so I’m happy JK And Joel have left!

  13. Dan @ November 28, 2008 at 1:33 pm | Permalink

and btw i respect that talkative outgoin DJs have a market and of course it would be a waste of time and money if they didnt speak – automated set ups can play the music! But I like to turn up my radio so would rather turn up music than talking, laughing and debating!

Can we have more Graham Smith on and less Allan Lake, where Holly Samos gone isnt she no longer part of the team thats a shame to tie in from the connection from the past

  15. Dan @ January 12, 2009 at 11:35 pm | Permalink

Marty from New Yawk (surely an “or” between the Y and k would make more sense?)

Anyway, this is the same Dan you’ve talked to on this forum before, along with Andy. About ex-Virgin DJ Greg Burns and stuff like that.

Did I hear you phone up Allan Lake the other night? Thoroughly entertaining! Your phone call that was, not the actual show. Mr Lake is one ASShole along with Iain Lee and Tim Shaw – The OC can get away with childish banter cos he does breakfast and Geoff’s a God, but the late night trio who go on and on about worthless ill-constructive crap, I really cant stand!

  16. Dan @ January 12, 2009 at 11:37 pm | Permalink

Oh and Darren, I totally support your request for less Allan Lake!

  17. Marty from new yawk @ January 14, 2009 at 11:36 pm | Permalink

@Dan- it was I laying in the new yawk accent quite thick w/Allan, ty for your kind words.

I respect your opinion about Iain, Allan and Tim though I disagree w/it. Each of these fellows works hard to entertain the listeners and while some might not take to one or more of these fellows, you can’t please everyone.

  18. Dan @ January 15, 2009 at 12:40 pm | Permalink

Yeah I’ve never quite worked out whether you actually are from New York/Yawk or a Brit who puts on the accent really well, and tbh I’m happy for that to remain a mystery!

Your right, you cant please everyone, and I cant doubt or fault the charisma of any of that trio, all suitable for national radio, but I just personally believe there has to be some talent involved. And ok apart from the odd bit of wit perhaps, i just think it sounds like guys relaxing down the pub enjoying themselves after a hard day at work, or students mucking about in each others halls of residence.
When I presented the news on my uni’s amateur radio station, there were some silly shows but thats fair enough as only really ppl who know the DJs in person will tune in, plus nobody is getting paid, but on national radio, i cant help but feel its a different story altogether.
But I shant go on, i appreciate demand for such genres (if u like) of radio show is very high so Iain, Allan and Tim – let them be :-)

  19. andy @ January 19, 2009 at 3:31 pm | Permalink

I was listening to Tim over the weekend and thought his show was a real good laugh. In these times a good laugh is just what we need! and i think absolute made the right decision by hiring Tim.

  20. Dan from LunDAN @ January 20, 2009 at 12:54 pm | Permalink

    Perhaps,

I do believe that the world has gone PC mad, so i suppose Absolute’s employment and tolerance of Tim, Allan etc is somewhat refreshing with that in mind.
Cant wait until Rossy is back! (but i only watch him on TV, i dont know him as a radio personality)
