When a young Tony Moorey was supporting his hospital radio job by working in Woolworths, organising fake plastic trees and removing the slightly chewed pick and mix – it is rumoured that he looked at a children’s fairy costume and made a wish: ‘One day I hope this whole stinking chain of shops shuts down and I get made Programme Manager of a national radio station.’
Well, his wish came true – which is good news for him and bad news for Woolworths. This week I really pleased to report that Tony Moorey has been promoted to Programme Manager here at Absolute Radio.
After working at Piccadilly Radio, Tony worked at the BBC for four years – until the challenge of making trailers for Edwina Currie, Dominik Diamond and David Mellor got too difficult for him – and he came to One Golden Square in the summer of 2002 as the producer of the Pete and Geoff Drivetime show.
On Pete’s departure to the BBC, Tony became part of the symposium on ‘The Geoff Show’ with Annabel, Nelson and Geoff – and famous for features such as his medical symptom quiz ‘Night Fever’, and ‘The Dead of the Night’ where he asked how certain historical characters died. For fear of his mental health, Nelson became producer and Tony took on more programming responsibilities. The world of morbidly macabre late night features has suffered terribly for it.
Tony is a well loved and respected manager, who has steered Absolute Radio transition through with infinite patience and good humour – always ensuring that all of the millions of jobs he has to do are done quickly, efficiently and with a minimum of fuss.
Tony entirely deserves this promotion. There is no one better qualified to see Absolute Radio establish itself as the premiere radio brand, and there is no one better to recommend which are the very best pick and mix sweets to choose.
Congratulations.
