David Jason on the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show

As part of our game Who’s Calling Christian in which celebrities ring in to try and win money for charity – David Jason called in live to the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show Tuesday morning after being asked by two friends, one of whom worked for the Samaritans and the other who looked after children with learning difficulties to be in with a chance of winning £20,000 for the charity.

Whilst on-air, David cracked an inappropriate joke which has received some commentary in the press so this morning he wanted to come back on-air to talk to Christian O’Connell about it this morning and apologise for any offence caused and Christian O’Connell was more than happy to oblige.

This is what he said to Christian:

“This is Sir David Jason speaking to you Christian yes.

“Absolutely. I mentioned  a silly  little joke, a play on words and unfortunately it seems that someone has taken offence  or someone has been upset about it and for that of course I am sorry and I apologise to that.  It was all done in a sense of fun and trying to drum up some interest in winning the award for my Charity so I’m sorry if I upset anyone. That’s the end of it really.

“I am involved in a number of charities – a special needs school, the Air Ambulance, the RAF benevolent fund and I’m involved in breast cancer so I’ve  got a number of charities that I would really like to help.  We all need to put our hands in our pockets occasionally to help those who are less fortunate situation than ourselves. The great British public are fantastic at this. This charity event of yours that you’ve created is a wonderful idea and it is creating a lot of interest and I’m very happy to be part of it. I’m sorry I may have inadvertently upset someone but that’s the end of it.”

Printed in today’s Metro newspaper was the following ‘joke’, sent in by a Scottish reader:

What do you call a Scottish cloakroom attendant? Angus McCoatup.

One wonders if there would have been quite as much media coverage of this ‘incident’, had Sir Dave instead chosen to treat the audience with this version?
