Frank Skinner to join Absolute Radio

Frank Skinner is to join Absolute Radio to present a Saturday morning breakfast show.

The stand-up comic and former chatshow host will join the national rock music station – formerly Virgin Radio – for a three month run.

It will be Skinner’s first regular radio presenting job and will be produced by Avalon Television, the first time an Absolute show has been taken out of house.

The Absolute Radio chief operating officer, Clive Dickens, said Skinner was a “seasoned professional and a fantastic communicator who would be hugely popular with our audience”.

“He is bloody funny and tells great stories and that is what you should expect from his Saturday show. I can see the enthusiasm with which he has approached it – radio is a medium that Frank very much wants to conquer.”

Skinner will be joined by co-presenter and radio newcomer Emily Dean for the show which begins on Saturday. It will be produced by Paul Raffaelli, who has produced shows on BBC Radio 6Music and Global Radio’s Xfm, and executive produced by Avalon’s Jon Thoday and Richard Allen-Turner.

Running from 8am to 10am, Skinner’s Absolute show will avoid going head to head with BBC Radio 2′s Jonathan Ross, whose show begins at 10am.

“I am very conscious that Jonathan does a great job on Radio 2 and I can understand why people might compare them but I see Frank and Jonathan doing two very different things,” said Dickens.

Dickens said there was a gap in the market between 8am and 10am on Saturday mornings.

“We are trying to carve out a new daypart and we are very excited by that. Frank is learning to drive the desk and he will very much be the anchor of the show.”

Skinner’s long-time production and management company, Avalon was responsible for his long-running ITV1 chatshow. It also produces shows including Harry Hill’s TV Burp and Al Murray’s Happy Hour, also on ITV1, and BBC1 sitcom Not Going Out.

Nice one! That should be good. Shame he isn’t on from 10am til 1pm though… a much better slot (even if he did go head to head with Jonathan Ross).

When does he start? Thanks. I need to adjust my listening and sleep pattern.

Your website shows a picture of RICHARD Skinner next to Frank’s name on Saturday’s schedule page. Is there any chance of Richard making a come back to Absolute? He really knows his music and would be great on the weekend late show I reckon. Let him playlist his own show though!

Thanks for the note Andy. I believe it’s a rogue image probably called “skinner.jpg” that’s causing problems. The website is being fixed as a I speak.

It is FRANK Skinner who has his first show tomorrow.

Richard, I believe, is broadcasting on another radio station.

No worries, I did think it was quite funny!

Listen, can I ask something? Has Nick Jackson left? Neil seems to have taken over his show. I’m sure Nick is a nice bloke, he certainly sounds very pro. I remember he was on my local station when I was growing up, Hereward Radio in Peterborough. He did the breakfast show for a little while after Paul Coyte left to join… One Golden Square! He was ok, and he sounds exactly the same now.

I know it’s a matter of taste but I personally prefer Neil. I remember him on the morning show on Invicta. After I left Peterborough, I got my first job in Kent so I left home & moved down to Kent/London about 10 years ago. Neil was brilliant there and he was really good when he first joined your station. I used to listen to him late at night and he was really funny. His style is a bit different now but I really enjoy his humour and down-to-earth-ness in the afternoons, so I hope he stays there.

Maybe there hasn’t been anything official said about this, but if you fancy being nice then you could drop me a private e-mail if it can’t be said publicly for some reason? If so, who will take over the 80s show on a Friday? I’m sure you’ve got better things to do but it would really make me happy. I’m just nosey really and I do like your station. I’ve listened since 1993 and I think it’s now starting to sound great again, after quite a few years in the wilderness!

Take care mate, have a good day…

    Andy,

The reason that Nick’s been off for a while is that yesterday he got married! And now he’s off on his honeymoon.

As a result Neil’s continuing to fill in for him. We’re lucky that we have an embarrassment of riches with our presenters.

Neil will continue to present the Friday night 80s show, and he’s on before Frank Skinner tomorrow morning too!

Thanks for taking the time to respond Adam, you’re a very nice man!

That’s great news for Nick, congratulations to the fella and his wife. Like Jethrene (Jethro’s sister) from The Beverley Hillbillies, I always cry at weddings…

    Laters…

    Andy
