Allan Lake

Week in, week out, Absolute Radio takes great care to respond to complaints, whether they come directly from listeners or through the regulator. Rather than just rebut comments, we do our best to take the appropriate action whenever necessary.

This morning Ofcom has ruled on such a complaint and has found the Allan Lake show in breach of the Broadcasting Code. Absolute Radio takes compliance of the code extremely seriously and after discussions with Allan we have together decided that the necessary action in this case is to part company.

First however, I would like to take a moment to thank Allan for all his hard work since he came to Absolute Radio. He is a passionate and creative broadcaster with an unswerving commitment to the station and his show. A “real” radio personality, Allan has a fantastic talent for engaging his audience, who will surely miss his presence on-air. Despite the circumstances of his departure I certainly hope you can join me in wishing Allan all the best for what I predict to be a long fruitful future.

what did allan do so wronge to get the sack, ok hes a bit off a mouth on him, but if your a regular listener, you would know that, theres a million other channel people can listen to, so why don`t they move on .. some people need to get a life… unless you tell me why, or we see it on the radio news, you lost a fun guy who made the night times worth listening, and if i was one off them i could`ve complained for so many things, but i chose not to, cos allan was on the same wave lenght as his fans, and he was fun.. your loss, someone elses gain, i do hope so for allans sake…. i won`t be listen to your station anymore, and thats for sure, and you proberly won`t notice one person anyway… i am a very sad person right now…..

I listened to him but didn’t find him at all entertaining. Good riddance to him I’m afraid but good luck all the same.

He will be missed – I always enjoyed his programmes. I will certainly join you in wishing him well.

Will Sam and Northern Monkey also be leaving the station?

I am gobsmacked you have sacked Allan Lake. He is the best presenter you have had at Absolute. I shall never listen to your station again. How can you be so stupid.

  7. Paul Nash @ April 27, 2009 at 6:53 pm | Permalink

I must here products mentioned on your radio station every day of every week by all of your presenters, Allan Lake has a big following. I moved to Absolute when he joined and have enjoyed your station. I will now follow Allan to his next station, your loss is there gain. I feel you have made a very bad move in letting go of Allan, he is a true radio ledgend in the making

    Sorry hear not here.

Oh, dang. Sad it had to be this way, as I genuinely enjoyed listening to him, but I hope the best for him in the future.

Afraid he never ‘did it’ for me – rather too purile and childish – so the radio went off at Midnight. It doesn’t now, so this is one listener you’ve regained, it’s much more pleasant listening to John Osbourne :-)

The punishment doesn’t fit the crime in my estimation. It is a sad day for Allan, Robbie, & Sam, the station, the listeners, and British radio.

  12. Haz, Bristol @ April 28, 2009 at 4:28 pm | Permalink

I can’t believe you sacked him – thats ridiculous!!
He was the reason I turned the tv off at night and started to listen to the radio again!! He makes you react to the radio, asking questions, interacting with the audience, making you feel involved!
So what was the actual reason? i don’t recall hearing any swearing? or any ‘difficult’ subjects being discussed? (bearing in mind that the show goes out after midnight!!)

Allan, all the best for the future, will be listening in on any radio station you go to!!

  13. Elg @ April 30, 2009 at 12:35 am | Permalink

I cant believe it. This guy was as midnight. what kind of offense can you do after midnight? and in the radio?. How much audience are you going to lose because of this? and dont tell me it’s not about audience, at least, you should post what the complaint was.

Well I talkled to someone at ABSOLUTE Radio, and I guess he was sacked cuz of mentioning some “product” its kinda sad that he is gone… At least here in the USA ya wouldnt get canned for mentioning some product on air :) (Jay Leno makes fun of things all of the time!)Ill miss you Lake Radio ! Hopefully you’ll appear somewhere else that I can stream the show from ! I missed Timmy when Allan took over but Allan Lake at least filled the VOID from Tim when he left to BRMB (I think its called)… I still love ABSOLUTE Though :)

    To Elg,

You can see what the complaint is about if you go on the Radio Today website or read the full Ofcom adjudication on their website.

I can t believe this is happening…. you are parting with one of the best, most funny and entertaining assets on AR…..
Someone is not paying attention to the audience….
you shall be sorry… and you will see that directly because Allan Lake had a huge audience…. wherever he goes if im lucky enough to catch him on the web from argentina I will be following him….. YOU SHOULD THINK FIRST ABOUT US!!! the ones who listens to Absolute all they long! Just parting with him like that…. you lack what it takes you know….. the immage of a scary radio too scared to stand by one of the best

Im very angry and upset…..is this THE NEW AND FANTASTIC ABSOLUTE RADIO????
is this the radio that would transform the old Virgin…
guys…I hace news for you: YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!
    DEFFO your loss

I think it’s stupid to penalise a presenter who is trying to give up smoking and sharing his experiences with everyone else, especially when the NHS wants everyone to give up smoking.
I wonder how many people gave up just because Allan was also giving up? Guess we’ll never know how many he inadvertently helped with this…

One complaint… ONE complaint. And he gets sacked for that! I have followed Allan across many radio stations and will continue to do so.
To take this action over something so petty is ridiculous. I just hope Allan gets a show at a decent time of day now so he can wipe the floor with your listener figures

I was waiting all this week after midnight… and nothing! Such a shame!!!!!! That was my best show on Absolute Radio! will be missing him , now I’m looking for another station. John is just borring….,
    //sorry for my english

he never really did it for me as a good presenter, but i think the reason for his suspension is a little silly. Ok mentioning products on air isn’t really allowed, but is it really a sacking offence?

  21. Agus @ May 3, 2009 at 2:53 am | Permalink

Allan, you will be missed. Your show was great.
Why didn’t they consider a suspension instead?

  22. Cammy @ May 5, 2009 at 9:38 am | Permalink

    Allan will be sorely missed.

    I’m disappointed.
I was regular listener to his shows, and knew that he had to be careful. He was always going to be sacked, as annoying as it is to admit it.

I work on the nightshift at my local mailcentre as I am a postie sorting mail through the night, and for me listening to Allan is wonderful, it makes my nightshift go quickly.
Radio is just fun with Allan around, why cant we have fun on radio within reason.
Now for me there is a gap at midnight,it feels like a bereavement, I even contacted the station and no one gave me a proper reply, or have given any info as to why allan was sacked, someone from the station should make a proper annoucment as to why allan was sacked, the station at least owes that to the listeners.
Come on Absolute Radio get your act together before you lose a lot of listeners out there, remember there is a lot of choice out there these days. Absolute is a good radio station and it cannot afford to lose listeners.

  24. Mal McGar @ May 8, 2009 at 1:25 am | Permalink

Allan Lake was the only reason i listened to Absolute Radio.

Absolute(ly) no more. If the people at the station were doing there job properly this whole thing could have been stopped.

    The best asset has gone!!

  25. Salome @ May 14, 2009 at 3:15 am | Permalink

Sorry but this is really stupid. I can’t believe Absolute Radio did this! Allan Lake got me through my mornings at the office… Does anyone know if he’s at another station yet?

I hope they are looking for a worthy replacement, because John Osbourne is such a bore.

  26. Marty from new yawk @ May 14, 2009 at 5:26 pm | Permalink

I share everyone’s grief with Allan’s departure but resent using Allan’s departure as an excuse to slag off John Osborne.

  27. marka @ May 15, 2009 at 8:34 pm | Permalink

I will not miss him as an on air personality he just never did anything for me. I don’t see the punishment fitting the crime but that is not my call to make. Since I am outside the UK the time shift made his content borderline (not that I even worry about that but there are little ears in the house that made for some awkward moments). I for one prefer radio that shuts up and puts up music. I don’t mind most interuptions but limited is all I can take ( I have abandoned stations before that played too many commercials). Good luck and learn from the past so it does not repeat (like last nights dinner).

  28. ron @ May 15, 2009 at 11:34 pm | Permalink

Good luck to allan lake,he was different, and absolute will lose listeners over this.
However my main problem with absolute at the moment is the PLAYLIST.
The so called no repeat workday, they are playing the same songs virtually everyday between 10 and 5,anyone noticed this.Starting to sound like the virgin days, same 12 albums.I really do hope absolute take notice of this.
I can list the albums they are playing from if required.

  29. cheryl @ May 21, 2009 at 8:49 pm | Permalink

I am really glad Allan Lake has gone (don’t really care how he spells his name although he must have mentioned it a million times). He was purile and loved the sound of his own voice so much there was hardly any music. Loving John Osbourne. Still missing Geoff and the symposium. At last I am driving home after work with some good music to keep me company.

  30. Ben in Wisconsin @ June 7, 2009 at 8:57 pm | Permalink

I cant believe you sacked him for talking about a FAKE, NON ADDICTIVE, Cigarette. He was prime time in America, and we all enjoyed listening, and interacting with the show! John Osborne is boring, he has no personality and also there is no one in the studio with him to converse.

SHAME ON YOU OFCOM AND ABSOLUTE!

Good riddance. He was from the Ian Lee school of unprofessional, tedious, childish radio.

Nice to be able to listen to Absolute at night again.

Any Allan listeners can now listen to him Mon-Thurs 7-12pm at http://www.allanlake.co.uk, the new home of NO RULES RADIO. Stuff that up yours Absolute!

Re the Absolute Radio programme reshuffle, why is Neil Francis now left with just 1 show(2 hrs pw)?, why has Sarah Champion also only got 1 show? Why does Ben Jones have to be on 6 days a week, surely an upcoming DJ or 1 of the aforementioned DJs given the Fri night/ Sat morning slots that BJ has, he is on far too much?

  37. ron @ October 10, 2009 at 1:40 am | Permalink

One year on and this station is not much better then the old name as far as music is concerned, even the presenters must be bored stiff of playing the same tunes everyday, anyone else agree with me on this.Still a long way to go before this station can even be compared to the best uk station at the moment oxfordshires jack fm who are part of same group.get tim shaw on breakfast as well ,give moyles a run for his money.
