Sony Radio Academy Awards Nominations by Adam Bowie

nominees

Last night saw nominations announced for the 2009 Sony Radio Academy Awards which are the equivalent of the BAFTAs for Radio, and Absolute Radio had a great night securing a record haul of nominations – seven in total – more than the station has ever had before, and more than any other commercial radio station this year.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

The production team is nominated for The Promo Award, and Absolute Coldplay (produced by Absolute Radio and TBI Media) is nominated in two categories – The Live Event Coverage Award and The Music Special Award.

Iain Lee is nominated for the The Listener Participation Award for his Sunday night show.

But the most impressive category has got to be The Entertainment Award where Christian O’Connell, Geoff Lloyd and Tim Shaw all find themselves up against one another. I can’t remember a commercial radio station ever dominating a single category like this before. It’s relatively common for the BBC to dominate categories, and it’s worth noting that the other two nominees in the category are both BBC broadcasters: Chris Evans and Adam & Joe.

Obviously there’s going to be no love lost between Christian, Geoff and Tim – the next DJ meeting should be very interesting.

The full list of nominations can be seen here, and the awards will be presented on Monday 11th May.

    Adam!

Really. I don’t have a competitive bone in my body, as well you know. In fact the thought of being in some kind of pumped-up, manly battle of the deejays is making me want to anonymously tip-off the Academy that our entry is a fake; a mash-up pieced together from old tapes of Russ ‘n’ Jono, ‘From Our Correspondent’ and an audiobook about twitching.

What’s missing from your ‘blog post is that none of us DJs pictured are nominated for awards as individuals (ie. No ‘Music Radio Personality of the Year’ etc.) – they’re all team awards for the overall programmes involved. So equal (or in my case more) credit should go to Annabel, Nelson, Tania, Dave, Vicki, Richie, Brian, Andrew, Ed, Eloise, Roque, ‘Pants’ and various random lap-dancing, Territorial Army conscript Razzle models.

I’m off to find a handkerchief now, so I can hold it over the telephone receiver to disguise my voice when I ring up Zafer Associates to get them to null and void my entry to avoid any awkwardness at that DJ meeting. Sorry Nelson, Tania and Annabel…

Adam I think i speak for all of the ‘Absolute 3′ when i say i actually winced when i heard all of us where in one mother of all categories together. The station is the winner here with three different but entertaining shows.

the only person enjoying this sick dirty dance is Clive. Sat grinning into his iphone as his prize pedigree bitches snarl at one another. we are his dancing monkeys, dancing to the tune of his little Clive ipipe (new App avail to download soon no doubt, Joan can you orgainise??)

All decent radio shows are the result of great teams and should i win they will get a public thanking. Should i get nothing, well…

I predict a win for adam and joe, silver for Evans, the rest of us mumblies being flung a nice bronze.

anyone contacted William Hill for odds. Surprised Clive hasnt got this sponsored

    Christian
ps plus i have 7 golds already so no room really on the mantlepiece…

It’s called breathing space, and I’m glad the move has paid off. I also haven’t seen a commercial station dominate like this – looking at the list, I was actually surprised. “How much did they pay for this?” I quipped to myself. :p

Congratulations to all involved; nomination is, in itself, a feat.

I think it’s not a good thing to have all 3 presenters competing in one category.

In the worst case scenario some Absolute Radio presenter will win a bronze award. This will no doubt piss off the other two Absolute Radio presenters who have not won. Should this circumstance arise, I urge the winner to graciously accept but acknowledge the other 2 as co-winners.

Next possibility, Silver Absolute Radio winner, other two presenters get nothing. Same recommendation.

Third possibility, Gold Absolute Radio winner, other two presenters get nothing. Ego will be impossible to control. Same recommendation.

Fourth possibility, Silver and Bronze Absolute Radio winners. Odd man out pissed off.

Fifth possibility, Gold and Bronze Absolute Radio winners. Odd man out really pissed off.

Sixth possibility, Gold and Silver Absolute Radio winners. Odd man out even more pissed off.

Seventh possibility, Gold, Silver, and Bronze all go to Absolute Radio presenters. Petty jealousies arise.

Conclusion: Awards are not such a good thing.
