Football on a Music & Entertainment Radio Station? by Clive Dickens

We frequently research our audience to get a better understanding of their feelings towards new Absolute Radio brand and our progress. This month we decided to focus on Sport. One of the ten pillars at Golden Square when we started on this journey last Summer was ‘Rock & Roll Fantasy Football.’ To be honest it always surprised me how a music radio station had the most established the best online Fantasy Game on UK Radio. What was it about our community they made them sign up in their tens of thousands and deliver over 5m page impressions across last season?

The sample below are all London listeners 25+ and you can see that our ‘Reluctant Adult’ target audience obviously obsess about the beautiful game and I am pleased to say they turn to Absolute Radio to play. Maybe it’s because our community are just passionate people? Or do they just want to win £20,000 prize?

The Fantasy Football competition is a wonderful feature. And while I’m ineligible to win a prize, as an accountant the numerical aspect appeals to me.

For purposes of the Golden Square game, I believe there ought to be a prize for futility. If necessary, I could provide you with hand-selected tat from the finest 99 cent shops in Manhattan.

They want the money! There are loads of new VIP’s signing up, but they won’t stay around for the community interactions. Same thing happens when there are tickets to win! Yes you have a passionate community of which I’m one, and we’re just playing for the fun of beating friends and DJ’s :)
