Jo Russell

0075

In the past year we’ve had the immense pleasure to work with Jo. She has brought a huge amount of talent and personality to our team, made an outstanding contribution to our programming and created some truly fantastic moments on-air. It’s therefore with more than just a little lump in my throat that I bring the news that we will soon be parting company, as our programme schedule in the early mornings and at the weekends undergoes a slight change of focus.

We’re going to miss her presence and so will the listeners. Jo has played a big part in our first year and those of us that have had the great honour to work with her can consider ourselves lucky to have enjoyed the experience. And it’s become clear that working with Jo is an experience full of enjoyment.

We still have a month to make the most of the pleasure of her company and talents though, so before she leaves I’d like to seize this moment to thank Jo for all her hard work, for being here at the start of our new adventure and for 12 months of great radio, we couldn‘t have done it without you.

Nobody knows this more than Paul Sylvester, so I’d like to give the last word to him:

To be honest I was about to file for sexual harassment, so I’m happy. Seriously though, I’ve had the most fun in my career working with Jo over the last year (I’ve never laughed so much) although her menopause have affected us both badly. It’s a bit of a blurrrrr as to what was on the radio and what wasn’t but Jo Jo has become a great friend (Her Mum’s even invited me to Barry Manilow with her). Given the fact Jo’s been seriously ill and lost close family members, to know what she’s achieved is amazing. In the words of Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous ‘It’s a miracle she can walk at all!’

Paul

We will be announcing schedule changes shortly, but this moment is Jo’s, so please join me in paying thanks and wishing her well for the future.

Tony

I’m so sorry to hear that Jo is leaving. I have enjoyed listening to her prgorammes – she has a great sense of humour. I would wish her well for the future and also for a speedy recovery from her illness.

Take care Jo and thanks for all the great programmes.

That is a real shame. Found Jo energetic and she sounded like she was having a good time. Do your best not to put another celeb on the books, get someone on who knows and likes their music

Wow, that’s a bombshell, it will be a great shame to no longer hear Jo’s warm laugh and her cheerful chattiness on Absolute. Wishing her all the best for the future.

Wow, I never knew about the health problems, what a trooper! I will certainly miss the chemistry between her and producer Paul. Jo, all the best. You’ll be greatly missed on Absolute. Best of luck!

I’m really, really sad to hear of Jo’s departure – she is an outstanding member of your presentation team.

Its also saddening to hear that Jo has had a rough time, she deserves every happiness.

Best wishes for the future Jo.

Sad news indeed. I hope all the best for Jo, health-wise and career-wise. More so, since she once responded to my email about her campaign to have Keane’s “Black Burning Heart” released as a single…

…and please, please, please make her win her early breakfast shows. Please!

Three Clue Trivia- Hot Babe, Early Breakfast, Leaving

Early breakfast is not an easy slot. Jo should be commended for her perseverance given everything she’s unfortunately had to deal with personally.

I wish Jo only the best going forward. The listeners and the station will be bereft of her wit, enthusiasm, and charm.

That’s terrible news! My weekend mornings are structured around Jo and Producer Paul and all the silliness such as Sunday Sinners etc. Jo is a very warm voice on the radio and unique in that she gives a very real person’s perspective… everyone can relate to her.
All the best for the future Jo!

I have so thoroughly enjoyed waking up and chilling out listening to Jo on the weekend (and on those dreadfully early early mornings) – her show has been a real highlight and always makes me smile.

    You will be missed!

I’m going to miss Jo too. Like you say, Niko, she’s really good about responding to e-mails and communicating with her listeners. Maybe it’s the timeslot that she’s got.

When I e-mailed her this morning to ask about her leaving, she told me that she’s planning to go to Australia. I wish her all the best there or wherever she ends up.

    I will miss Jo,
see she’s being replaced with Dave Gorman, that’s me switching off the radio at work weekend mid mornings then.
    Shame.

I will miss Jo, I was unsure about another female DJ as I feel they dont always have a lot of presence but I can truly say I will miss her. Stop employing celebs, I cant stand Saturday Mornings with Frank Skinner Yes he may be good on the TV but not on a radio show

Being a recent online listener from Australia I was sad to find out Jo was leaving. Jo is 1 in a million she brings warmth and humour to my days and will be missed by many from around the world.

Jo. You will be sorely missed. We all love you and your show. My friend Sarah has a bit of a thing for you and cried a bit when she heard you were leaving. Best wishes for the future, you are one of the greatest DJ’s I’ve ever listened to and makes us all realise that even the smallest, mundane thing can be funny

  18. Simon and Jacqui @ October 3, 2009 at 10:09 am | Permalink

We have only recently found out about Jo and have really enjoyed the last few weeks. So we were REALLY disappointed to hear she was leaving so soon.

I can’t believe that Absolute are letting a talent like this go; replacing her with ‘celebrities’ is a big mistake. It might please your advertisers but it won’t keep listeners long term. The BBC have a bigger budget for ‘names’ anyway, so you’ll only get B listers.

Jo should be given a breakfast or drivetime peak time slot; I hope Absolute see the error of their ways.

I could not agree more with what you said, Mark and Scott. It is so true. Jo is the loveliest person I have ever listened to and I feel really bad that such a wonderful person like her has to endure sad times. I hope everything turns out good for her in the end and wish her only the best for now and ever on. Love you Jo…

Jo, I listened to your last show today. Am extremely sad to not be able to hear you anymore. You’re amazing. So warm and funny and a pleasure to listen to. Hope you and producer Paul realise how much enjoyment you’ve brought to someone like me who’s never before tuned in for a specific dj. All the best. You’ll be so sorely missed.

It always seems just as I become ‘familiar’ with a weekend morning presenter they get shifted on! Have grown to love Jo’s show and the daftness that her and producer Paul bring with them. I won’t be listening to Dave Gormon, I’m already flipping channels when Skinner is on….

Whatever adventures await you next Jo I hope life treats you well, thank you for making us smile this last year x

    Will miss you Jo xx

Shame the slight shift included the loss of one of your best presenters..change isn’t always better, sometimes it’s just change.Good Luck Jo,will miss you.

Noticed Abolute 80′s being replaced on Friday evenings..another slight shift???

Jo, I have loved listening to your shows in the early morning and at weekends. As I work in a bakery and start at 4am, and work weekends til 12, I heard most of your shows. I must admit to initially thinking, “not another northern loud bird” ! But how wrong I was. Your warmth, humour, giggles and good mood, transformed many a day from dark to light. I will miss all of that, selfishly. But now, to learn of your illness, I wish you all the love you need to get better. And I’m sure many thousands feel the same way. You are by far the most naturally talented DJ around, and we want to see you back someday. So, take care, get well, and come back to us. Chris xxx

Jo always sounded like she really enjoyed herself, great rapport with the listeners, early breakfast not easy to be lively on but she was, mid morning @ weekends also not easy as people often in a rush & in & out so not able to listen in full. Hope her health, family problems resolve themselves soon. Maybe 1 day she can come back to Absolute. Good luck Jo & Thank you for being well a good laugh etc.

Hearing your infectious laugh and sense of fun got my weekends off to a good start. It will take some getting used to not hearing you every Saturday and Sunday.

I hope you can put your health problems behind you and I offer my belated condolences for your losses.

I wish you every success in the future.

The station will never be the same, I have been a listener since the re branding, it started off as a fresh outlook on music, now you have allowed one of the best DJs you ever had to leave, and have replaced the likes of her with and complete dross, and apart from Christian, Sarah, and Leona, I really don’t know how you are going to survive, (playing any Lilly Allen track on a station that prides itself on being the home of rock music) think again, or like myself people will not listen and will simply desert and seek a station that actually entertains and actually lives up to it’s promise Jo you will be missed

    Hello,

Jo is a great presenter, I’m sure she will be sadly missed at absolute.

She has a lot of enthusiasm, Very active and very funny! She worked at Trent FM as one half of Jo and Twiggy and Breakfast for 10 years. I have been listening to Jo for around 4 years, Won a lot on her shows (at trent FM) I enjoyed talking with her on the phone when I phoned in. She’s a loverly woman.

She has a very sensative voice, which is very easy to listen too.

I understand she was off ill when she was on trent, So I wish her a very… Very speedy recovery, And I hope she will be back at her best very soon!

    Best Wishes,
    Pierce

Dear Absolute, Please please please sort out the 10am – 1pm Sunday show. It needs a proper music DJ.

Can I suggest Sarah. What do others think ??

  39. Davie @ December 15, 2009 at 11:45 am | Permalink

Sarah is a good shout yeah or what about Danny Wallace

  40. Lloyd @ December 26, 2009 at 1:38 am | Permalink

I sincerely hope Absolute let Jo go to recover from her illness and not for programming reasons because that would demonstrate a massive error of judgement. Frank Gorman or is it Dave Skinner are far too similar and do not come close to the warmth and proffessionalism demonstated by Jo.

Good luck Jo, you deserve better.

    xx
