A New Station by Chris Lawson

So today I’m excited to say we launch a new radio station called….dabbl

dabbl will broadcast live on DAB between 7pm and 6am and for the beta launch period (approx six weeks) it will showcase exclusively live music.

It’s a new user-controlled radio where the playlist is in your hands – you vote for the songs you want to hear.
You can browse all of the songs in the library by artist, track name, live event and year. Once you’ve found a track you like, all you have to do is hit the ‘Vote’ button. The tracks with the most votes are played out during the following hour. Simple!

The website dabbl.co.uk will go live this afternoon, and a lot of hard work has gone in to this by a large group of people, so thank you all.

As you know, in our first year as Absolute Radio, we recorded and broadcasted over 100 live performances from the Isle of Wight Festival and Hard Rock Calling, Blur, Coldplay and Kings of Leon gigs, and V Festival. We wanted dabbl to showcase this fantastic live content, and celebrate the best live performances.

What next for dabbl?

dabbl won’t always be about live music. We are looking at introducing other themes, and we want you to help us choose them. After a quick hands up around the office at One Golden Square, here are a few ideas:

Britpop classics, classic covers, songs to rock-out to, Punk Rock karaoke tunes, songs with colours in the title. Anything goes. Please forward your suggestions.

This is a beta trial, so expect some changes along the way and naturally a few teething problems, but we hope you like it.

Chris

    Wow! This sounds great.

No sign of it on my DAB, though.

Because it goes live at 7pm this evening, you won’t be able to see the channel on your DAB set until then!

I presume it is only available on DAB in England, Scotland and Wales? Or will it also be available on DAB Northern Ireland?

Currently it’s only available in London, because that’s the only spare DAB capacity we currently have. But it’ll be available online across the UK. And you’ll need to vote for tracks online anyway!

Oh, okay, thanks. I shan’t go looking for it though, not living in London.

Isn’t the branding for it a bit weird, then? The “dab” in dabbl obviously alludes to DAB, but only Cockerneys can listen to it on DAB. You should call it “onlionel”.

This creates an even greater problem for me. I have enough trouble trying to listen to all the content of Absolute Radio and Absolute Classic Rock and Absolute Extreme and podcasts. I may need to quit my job.

Good luck with the new station!

No need for trouble, Marty. We colonists can’t listen due to copyright restrictions that honestly don’t make sense to me. (TIML Media Ltd. owns or at least should own the copyrights on these recordings. Honestly, streaming Absolute Radio poses a much more tricky copyright problem than live recordings I think.)

Any ideas whether dabbl will be available in London on DAB all the time – not just after 7pm??? Otherwise I fear you may lose a listener who loved Absolute Extreme
