RAJAR Internet Listening Update by Adam Bowie

podcasts

RAJAR has today published the topline findings of its latest “MIDAS” survey that looks at “internet delivered audio services”: in other words, podcasts and listen again.

It shows that the number of people who listen to Personalised Online Radio services has increased from 3.9m to 4.5m – a figure that’s almost certainly between driven by the dramatic growth of Spotify, as well as the continued popularity of services like Last.fm.

8.3m adults claim to have heard about WiFi Radio – with recent high profile product launches like the Pure Sensia and the Logitech Squeezebox probably contributing to this increased awareness.

And over one third of the population has listened to radio via the internet.

Turning to podcasts 8.1m people have downloaded a podcast, with 4.4m saying they listen to podcasts at least once a week. And the average user listens to 5.9 different podcasts – they’re also more likely to be male, and younger rather than older.

Are there weekly reach numbers rather than ‘ever listened’, which could be a bit more relevant.

There aren’t… But watch this space. That’s something that’s been discussed.
