Absolute 80s – Specialist Radio Station of the Year by Paul Sylvester

Absolute 80s is the second youngest child in our ever growing family of stations, but today we feel like proud parents as our 6 month old baby clutches a trophy in its wee small arms. Last night it was named ‘Specialist Radio Station of the Year’ at the Freesat awards.

Beating off competition from the likes of 5Live Sports Extra and Jazz FM, the judges said ‘Absolute 80s has attracted a huge amount of interest both from presenters and people that want to be involved in the station but also, even more importantly, from listeners. It has achieved an astonishing reach in a very short period of time.” In the five months it has been on air, Absolute 80s has developed a reputation as a fun and enjoyable radio station among its 246,000-strong weekly audience, bringing with it nostalgia, excitement and a real passion’.

Clive was on hand to pick up what is a really lovely (if very heavy) award from comedian Ed Byrne. The work which has gone into making Absolute 80s an award winner has been immense and spreads across every floor at 1 Golden Square, but there are some people without whom this award would never have been won. To Leona, Nick, Ben, Lucio, Richie and Christian, thank you for being so passionate about the station and for delivering consistently excellent shows. And to James, David and Tim, well done on programming some truly spectacular, diverse and generally brilliant songs which have made Absolute 80s one of the most talked about radio stations in the UK.

After a successful launch on DAB in London, Absolute 80s is available across the UK and the love for the station continues to grow. Check out the facebook page to see how many people are engaged with the radio station, suggesting songs and telling us of their memories. Well done Absolute 80s – here’s to many more awards.

Congrats! It’s a pleasure to listen to Absolute 80s. But, I’m beginning to feel guilty. When I listen to Absolute 80s, I can’t listen to the presenter on Absolute Radio,Absolute Classic Rock or Absolute Radio 90s. I will just have to clone myself.
