We’re pleased to announce that Absolute Radio has joined Radioplayer partnership. Set to launch later this year, Radioplayer is an exciting joint initiative between the BBC and commercial radio, that will revolutionise online listening by offering UK online radio in one simple player.
As the radio industry prepares for a digital future, internet listening is an important component of all digital radio listening alongside DAB and DTV. Currently standing at 2.9% of all radio listening, the aim of Radioplayer is to boost the 4.1m live streamed hours currently consumed each month (RAJAR Q1, 2010) to contribute to the growth of all digital listening. Absolute Radio streamed 6.6 million hours worldwide in June 2010.
Although our inclusion into the partnership has only just been announced, we’ve been working with the other founding members – BBC, Global Radio, GMG Radio and RadioCentre – for a while now, and it’s great to see some of the sharpest minds in UK radio collaborating to create a product that will have a real, positive impact on radio listening.
Behind the scenes, the Radioplayer technical team includes the BBC iPlayer team, clever people from Global Radio Labs and GMG Radio, and of course members of the One Golden Square Labs team.
Following some fascinating user insight, the team have agreed upon a set of important standards and some exciting features designed to make listening to radio online intuitive and easy. A groundbreaking new search engine will enable listeners to find their favourite stations, discover new ones, search by programme and genres, and store favourites as pre-sets.
The team are currently refining the metadata model and central services that will power the search engine and pre-sets, while finalising the player interface ahead of a beta launch in October. In the meantime, take a look at this demonstrative video:
More information can be found at ukradioplayer.info, including details of how other stations can pre-register ahead of launch, and the latest on Radioplayer developments.
