ON 21st June 2010 Absolute Radio launched it’s latest digital incarnation, Absolute Radio 90s which had been created, developed and put to air in just 6 weeks of late nights, much strong coffee and a great deal of internal deliberation and debate – do you remember those test transmissions?. Two months later and I think we can be justly proud of the infant service, which if online & mobile streaming hours is any indication, is performing as well as Absolute 80s was at this stage of it’s launch (and look at how A80s is flying!).
Together with an excellent quintet of presenters (Lucio, Mark, Vicki, Ben and Polly) who know their 90s music inside out and a playlist which we feel offers the breadth, variety and the freshness of 90s indie, rock, pop and alternative dance, we think we have hit on a winning formula. Throw into that mix, music specials from the likes of James, Richard Ashcroft, Skunk Anansie and Republica and this is no mere jukebox station but a fully fledged digital proposition. The reaction on Facebook and Twitter has been overwhelmingly positive amongst an oft critical audience. So the signs are good but of course it will all depend on RAJAR and we will get our first show how well AR90s is doing come Late October.
For the statistically minded amongst you we are now playing well over 2500 individual tracks across the Absolute Radio Brand Network and in terms of unique tracks Absolute 80s share 29% of tracks with Absolute Radio; Absolute Classic Rock shares 37% of tracks with Absolute Radio and our latest addition Absolute Radio 90s shares 25 % of tracks with Absolute Radio, showing a real breadth and variety across all our services.
