Absolute Radio Scoop 7 Sony Radio Academy Awards

We are celebrating no less than seven gongs from last night’s Sony Radio Academy Awards, otherwise known as the Radio Oscars. As staff slowly begin to stumble in through the doors of One Golden Square this morning looking a little worse for wear they can take solace in the fact that all of their hard work has paid off!

Our first Gold of the night went to Annabel Port in the Best On Air Contributor category, described by judges as ‘hugely entertaining’, it was one of two awards for the Hometime Show, with Geoff Lloyd and team also picking up a Silver for Best Music Programme, a category won by Radio 2’s Simon Mayo.

Ronnie Wood stormed to victory taking the Gold Music Radio Personality of the year award for The Ronnie Wood Show on Absolute Radio and Absolute Classic Rock produced by Somethin Else. Ronnie also narrowly missed out on the fiercely contested DAB Sony Rising Star Award to 5 Lives Robbie Savage.

The Frank Skinner Show, Avalon for Absolute Radio won Gold for Best Entertainment, rounding out Absolute Radio’s best ever haul of Golds. Judges described it as ‘the whole package: entertaining and engaging, with laugh-out-loud moments.’

The Absolute Radio Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show took bronze in Breakfast Show of the year. Judges said “Christian relates to his own experiences and contemporary observations in a way which is real and amusing. Together with his fellow studio colleagues, they bring a smile and a connection with the audience that is delivered in an energetic way without it being overpowering.  The judges loved it”

The Absolute Radio Network won Silver for Best Station Imagining while the team celebrated a resounding victory by bagging Silver for Best Use of Multiplatform with Absolute Radio’s Mobile Apps.

All in all a fantastic achievement which is testament to all of the hard work and dedication that has gone into the year. Now stop moaning about those hangovers and get back to work. We’ve got next year’s Sony’s to prepare for!
