THE ARQIVA AWARDS 2011 – by Paul Sylvester

…and the awards season comes to a record-breaking close for everyone involved with Absolute Radio.

Last night saw us scoop 4 Arqiva Commercial Radio awards, doubling last year’s tally. Ronnie Wood bagged a brace including Best Newcomer and Best Specialist programme – in typical Rock n Roll style Ronnie was AWOL when the newcomer result was announced, resulting in some frantic searching of the hotel’s kitchens for the fire escape where he was having a ciggie. That’s now a Sony Gold, a Radio Production Award and 2 Arqivas in the award cabinet for Ronnie’s Absolute Radio and Absolute Classic Rock show. Not bad to say it only started a year ago… Ronnie’s success is currently featuring on the BBC News website

Christian O’Connell who hosted the event won the prestigious Breakfast show of the Year award. The OC was hosting the awards and had been told that Capital’s Johnny and Lisa had won and so he also took the award for ‘most shocked person in the room’ when the correct result was delivered. A great result for everyone who is part of creating  commercial radio’s best breakfast show – Bails, Richie and Greg all got a well deserved late pass and were on hand for some champers although unfortunately Maggie was missing-in-action due to a prior engagement with a man-band at Wembley Stadium. The video of the motorbility scooter challenge even featured on the big screens.

It’s a year since we marvelled at the inadequacies of the England team at the World Cup, but 12 months on, the recognition for Baddiel & Skinner’s World Cup podcasts continues. 3.5 million downloads and now an award for Best Radio Feature of the year. We were delighted that David was on hand to pick up the trophy.

We continue to be incredibly proud to lead the way in commercial radio when it comes to working with independent production partners: Avalon (Baddiel & Skinner) and Somethin’ Else (Ronnie Wood) are an integral part of the wider One Golden Square  family and it’s a privilege to work with such talented teams including producers Emma Newman and Claire Neal.

Congratulations also go to our colleagues at Jack FM who scooped three prizes including Station of the Year, Presenter of the Year for Trevor Marshall and Social Action Initiative for Jack in Afghanistan. Well done to Greg Burke who was part of more awards than anyone else in the building, with a foot in both the Absolute Radio and Jack camps. GMG radio also had a great night with their Real North East, North West and Yorkshire stations all winning as well as David Jensen scooping the Lifetime achievement award.
