The luck of the Irish by Maggie Doyle

Hammersmith may be a particularly Irish suburb of London but even more so on Saturday night when members of the Irish Community in the UK gathered together for the Irish World newspaper’s Gala evening, celebrating their 25th Anniversary.

The Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show was up for Best Breakfast Radio Show so I put a new frock on (green, of course) and toddled off to represent the team as best I could – by making sure I was on time for the Champagne

I was surprised to see Sinead O’Connor’s name on my table and even more surprised when the woman herself turned up, in her now signature hoodie. Her performance on stage two hours into the night was a personal highlight; she has
still got that incredibly haunting voice.  When she came back to our table I told her how much I enjoyed her song, she squeezed my hand, smiled and said “thanks”.  I felt blessed!

Straight after Sinead, the one and only Mary Byrne (former X Factor contestant) belted out two Shirley Bassey hits – a different performance, but just as powerful.

The night went on, with more awards and musical interludes, to which some of the now happily entertained audience got up to dance to! It really doesn’t take much to get us Irish on the floor and the complimentary tot of whiskey after the meal helped!

Eventually at the end of the night, the Best Breakfast Radio Show award was given… and as Christian and the rest of the team were missing, it fell to yours truly to totter on stage to collect the shiny gong in the above picture!
