HARD ROCK CAFE PRESENTS THE ABSOLUTE RADIO SESSIONS WITH HARD-FI

Absolute Radio and Hard Rock Cafe have today announced that, in support of The Prince’s Trust, Hard-Fi will be the latest act to grace the stage at London’s iconic Hard Rock Cafe.

The number one album selling British band, known for their anthemic tunes like Living for the Weekend, will be performing a live session on Tuesday 27th March at the venue, which allows fans to get up close and personal with major
recording artists.

Hard-Fi are established friends of Absolute Radio having headlined at Brekfest which was a music festival at a listener’s house last year, so we’re thrilled to be working with the band again.

The Hard Rock Cafe London, who celebrated their 40th anniversary last year, will host the exclusive gig.

Tickets can be won by tuning into Absolute Radio, or visiting www.absoluteradio.co.uk.

A further 20 complimentary tickets will be available by visiting www.facebook.com/thebackroomlondon and ‘liking’ the post relating to the Hard-Fi gig and leaving a comment on the post.

The session is being played in support of The Prince’s Trust, which has helped over 17,000 young people through football since 1997, working with over 65 Premier League and Football League Clubs to deliver a range of programmes that have helped three in four young people in to work, training or education.

Highlights from the gig will be played out on 15th April on the Sunday Night Music Club on Absolute Radio.

A video of the session will also be available to watch online at www.absoluteradio.co.uk

Rock N Roll Football ‘Lads Night In’

Last night was our Rock N Roll Football ‘Lads Night In’ with Wrighty, Russ Williams and Jim Proudfoot – a night which saw us team up with Club Wembley to stage an exclusive panel show event to help raise vital funds to support The Prince’s Trust.

We revelled in the Rogan Josh Curry, accompanied by beer (of course) at a truly amazing venue overlooking the Wembley pitch and settled down for some serious banter with Wrighty, Russ, Jim and special guest – Sun journalist Antony Kastrinakis before watching Arsenal v Newcastle on the super big screen.

Lead by Wrighty – The Arsenal contingent in the room brought the house down when Thomas Vermaelen’s injury time winner set Arsenal to within just 1 point of Spurs in the Premier League, much to the dismay of Mr Tottenham – Russ Williams.

The night was all about raising funds to support The Prince’s Trust with top prizes on offer in our silent auction plus donations for photo opportunities with Wrighty and the FA cup, (yes the real FA Cup!). The charity has helped more than 650,000 thirteen to thirty year olds since 1976 and supports 100 more each working day – and one of the key areas through which they work is through football.

The Prince’s Trust needs almost a £1million a week to help continue its vital work getting young people into work, education or training. Check out this video below. Find out how you can make a difference at www.justgiving.com/absoluteradio.

Again we want to thank Club Wembley for welcoming us into their fabulous home. There really was no better place to talk about the beautiful game!

See you at the next one

Rock ‘N’ Roll Football’s ‘Boys Night In’

On Tuesday 18th October we staged the very first Rock ‘N’ Roll Football Boys Night In – an exclusive event created to raise money for, our partner, youth charity The Prince’s Trust. Money raised will go towards helping disadvantaged young people across the UK get the skills and confidence they need to get a job.

Through its  partnership with the Premier League and Professional Footballers Association The Trust has helped over 17,000 young people through football since 1997, working with over 65 Premier League and Football League Clubs to deliver a range of programmes that have helped three in four young people in to work, training or education.

We are asking for donations to support The Trust so do check out the videos, podcast and photos at the links below. If you enjoyed them please make a donation here: http://www.justgiving.com/rocknrollfootballboysnightin

We transformed the studios at One Golden Square to make way for a select crowd of just 26 guests including competition winners, clients  and friends of the station.

Our very own Ian Wright and Russ Williams hosted proceedings, along with regular contributors to the show, including former Arsenal man Perry Groves, comedian Ian Stone plus special guest, Spurs legend and Prince’s Trust Ambassador Gary Mabbutt.

The team acted as an expert panel bringing the Rock ‘N’ Roll Football Saturday show mechanic to a live audience for the very first time. The crowd watched Man City take on Villarreal in the Champions League, talked tactics and predictions with the stars of the show before enjoying the match on not one but three big screens.

There was plenty of pizza and beers courtesy of our friends at Papa John’s and Miller as Russ and Wrighty lead a banter filled pre-match Q&A session.

It was a great night! Check out the videos here , all of the photo’s here and get the full podcast here by selecting the Wednesday 19th October Wrighty podcast.

Absolute Radio listeners choose Harry Moseley’s charity to win £10,000

Absolute Radio listeners voted in their thousands over the weekend to give prize money from a competition running on the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show to the campaign set up by Harry Moseley.

The 11 year old sadly lost his battle with a brain tumour at the weekend, and had campaigned tirelessly to raise money for research into cancer by selling bracelets, earning him the title of Britain’s Kindest Kid.

The prize money was donated as part of the ‘Who’s Calling Christian – Big in the 80s’ competition which invited celebrities to call the breakfast show and nominate the charity they support. David Hasselhoff, Philip Schofield, Stephen Fry, Kim Wilde and Tony Hadley were just some of the celebrities who picked up the phone, but it was 80s TV presenter Wincey Willis who won listeners’ hearts by nominating Harry’s  cause “Help Harry, Help others”.

“All of us were touched by an incredible young man called Harry Moseley” said Absolute Radio Breakfast Show presenter Christian O’Connell. “Good on Wincey Willis for telling us about him. We are all saddened by his passing at the weekend and our thoughts are with his family.”

“A special thanks to Absolute Radio listener Tanya Barrow from Fleet in Hampshire, who waived her right to £5,000 winnings by getting Wincey to call in. It now takes the total donation to Harry’s Charityup to £10,000.”

Wincey Willis told Absolute Radio “I am so grateful. It’s been a very, very difficult time for everyone but this has shown how much people love Harry and will always love him and appreciate everything that he’s done. He’s a light that will never go out. It’s raised so much awareness of Harry’s charity and I can’t thank you enough.”

Carolan Davidge from Cancer Research UK thanked Wincey Willis for her support and said “Harry Moseley was an inspiration to children and adults alike in his quest to raise awareness of brain cancer through his campaign ‘Help Harry Help Others’. He singlehandedly raised over £85,000 for brain cancer research by fundraising and selling hand-made bracelets. He also helped Cancer Research UK raise hundreds of thousands of pounds by supporting the charity’s work and speaking about his illness at events.

WHO’S SCORING CHRISTIAN?

The Absolute Radio Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show launched the Who’s Scoring Christian? campaign this week.

You’ve heard of Who’s Calling Christian? – Tony Blair, Roger Moore, Henry Winkler and Ricky Gervais certainly have as they won thousands for charities by taking part. Well it’s evolved – we’re celebrating a new era of football at Absolute Radio, having won the rights to exclusive Barclays Premier League commentaries over the next three years with Who’s Scoring Christian?

There is £10,000 to be won, all for one phone call or voicemail. This time though we’re looking only for Football Legends. That means a player currently in the Premier League, or maybe a famous name from the top flight in years gone by. It means a famous footy pundit or maybe a ref. And yes, it even means one of the famous WAGs from the Premier League, although we don’t guarantee to know who they are!

If the legend that you get to call wins then you win £5,000 and they win £5,000 for the charity of their choice. If the football legend calls in off their own back -  the whole £10K goes to charity!

We’re half way through the Who’s Scoring Christian? campaign and we’ve had some fantastic Football Legends calling in to the show already to help win money for the charity of their choice. We’ve been treated to inside football secrets; codeword’s used and games played in the tunnel and on the pitch, pranks in the dressing room, forfeits and more.

Our very own Ian Wright, who hosts the post match show on Rock ‘N’ Roll football Live on Absolute Radio extra every Saturday afternoon, called in on Monday. He told Christian about a certain code that the Arsenal old boys used to use -  ‘cup of tea at half time’. Find out what Wrighty is on about and listen to all of the other calls from the likes of Kenny Dalglish, Jimmy Greaves, Bob Wilson, Chris Kamara, John Fashanu, Fulham’s Danny Murphy, Sunderland’s Darren Bent and more right here.

There are still two more days left and it’s all to play for. You’ve still got time to get those Football Legends to call in and grab yourself £5K.

Put this number into your mobile -  0330 123 1215 and get those Football Legends to start Scoring Christian.

Cue the klaxon, Who’s Calling Christian is back

Who’s Calling Christian got off to a flying start this morning with calls from Ricky Gervais, Helen Baxendale, Adrian Chiles and Shay Given.

Gervais had returned from America to find 10 emails asking him to call Christian while Adrian Chiles was accosted by a mum the school gates just days after another listener targeted him at his local Sainsbury’s.

It seems that people everywhere are doing whatever they can to get their hands on the prize money and a quick look at Twitter reveals that George Clooney, Noel Fielding and Stephen Fry are just some of the celebs our listeners have in their sights.

Whoever calls in however, we’ll be asking them all the same question: “What would you do if you were Prime Minister?” It’s already generated some surprising results…

Ricky Gervais:  “I suppose the serious answer would be stopping animal cruelty. Particularly those inbred people who still go hunting when they are not meant to, I’d like to smack them in the mouth.”

Adrian Chiles: “I’d say we’re going to have the World Cup then we are going cancel football for a year. The 2010/11 season will be cancelled. I think we all need a break from it – the players, the fans, we all need a bit of time to reflect.  A Farmer has to leave a field fallow from time to time. We need to re-group, go back to our families, go back to whatever else we do in our lives and tackle it afresh in the new season.”

Helen Baxendale said: “The very first thing I would do is make sure all children did ballet before their lessons at school. I’m standing for ballet for everyone. Like in China they do Tai Chi, I think we should all be out in the park doing an hour’s ballet. It would do a lot do a lot good for our self discipline, motivation and appreciation for the arts.”

There are two weeks still to go so watch this space and hear the calls in full via the brilliant new Breakfast Show homepage at www.absoluteradio.co.uk.
