While looking through our podcast download stats, we noticed an increase in downloads to the ‘Zune’, what’s a Zune I hear you say…..well, let us tell you a bit more about this neat little entertainment platform and portable media player from Microsoft.
Launched last year, the first thing that you notice about the Zune HD is it’s glossy 3.3-inch touchscreen which if you’re used to the action of an iPhone or iPod touch will be very familiar and unlike other touchscreens that have tried to rival Apple, this does a very good job. The user interface is smooth, responsive and performs brilliantly, which is what you’d expect from it’s Tegra APX 2600 chip.
So what does the Zune HD do – firstly it’ll playback audio in many formats so downloading and listening to your favourite Absolute Radio podcasts is not only possible but made easy with its desktop software and podcast subscription option. The video below demonstrates just how easy it is to subscribe to your favourite podcast channels.
The video playback quality on the Zune is very good and what you’d expect when you combine OLED technology, tight pixel density and a small screen. HD video content is crisp and clear as you’d expect. With most devices you get one or the other, great video or great audio, but not usually both which is what the Zune is able to provide. Compared to similar devices the Zune HD audio sounds more expansive and open.
The Zune also has a web browser which is built upon the existing mobile Internet Explorer. Although it is useful and allows zoom-in/zoom-out via pinch screen technology, long sessions of browsing the web is probably not what the Zune was designed for due to it’s screen size.
For those FM radio lovers, the good news is that the Zune has a built-in FM RADIO and the audio quality again is pretty good and as it’s FM there’s no need to hunt for a free wifi connection when out and about.
Just like the Apple touch has iTunes, The Zune HD requires its own desktop software which allows the owner to manage the device contents and as you can see from the video below, it’s not only easy to use but looks great too!
The Zune HD is available in 16GB and 32GB varieties and costs between £150 and £200.
