Absolute Radio available on the O2 Joggler via the PURE Lounge by Paul Brown

The O2 Joggler has been described by many as a digital calendar for the whole family to use, but it’s much more than that. It does feature a calendar which can sync to O2’s online calendar app but the Joggler is also a digital photo frame, media streamer, digital weather station, news reader and much more.

So, why have the OGS Labs team got one, well apart from being able to listen to all of your favourite Absolute Radio podcasts and watch great video content, it also features ‘The Lounge’ from our friends at PURE providing access to a selection of UK radio stations including Absolute Radio and Absolute Classic Rock with Absolute 80s and dabbl coming soon. The O2 Joggler features wireless and wired connectivity allowing live updates for it’s traffic, weather and news services, plus has a built-in SIM card allowing users to send and receive SMS text.

The O2 Joggler costs around £100 and features a 7” touch screen, 1 Gig onboard memory and has the capability of audio and video playback in a variety of formats including MPEG-2, MPEG-4 part 2, MPEG-4 part 10 (H.264), WMV 9, DivX, Vc1, FLV, MP3, WAV and WMA.

RadioDNS is born (officially) by Paul Brown

Last week, on the 16th of February our very own RadioDNS expert, Ben Matthew attended the Radio DNS Second General Assembly in Geneva where it was voted unanimously to adopt the Statutes, Membership Process, Trust Model, IPR Policy, and other recommendations proposed by the Statutes Drafting Team. All of these can be found here in the documentation section at the official RadioDNS website.

So what does this mean, well in short and apart from being a very exciting time for traditional broadcast radio, RadioDNS is now able to legally form itself as a not-for-profit organisation, and start providing the RadioDNS basis on a full operational basis – as well as promote the technology to device manufacturers and broadcasters.

Supporters of RadioDNS can now choose to become a Member of RadioDNS, which allows them to influence the direction of RadioDNS, vote at meetings, and nominate candidates for the roles of Chairperson, Secretary and Steering Board Member. Supports can also become a User of RadioDNS which means that your station details are in RadioDNS, but no more than that.

The One Golden Square Labs team have always been huge supporters of RadioDNS and are proud to be a Member of the new organization. Absolute Radio were one of the first commercial radio stations to adopt the technology ready for the launch of the Pure Sensia and we’re looking forward to seeing RadioDNS technology adopted by more devices in the future. The RadioDNS technology compliments our iTunes tagging strategy perfectly.

For further information and details of what RadioDNS is and how and why it will become an important part of traditional broadcast, take a look at the following video:

Joshua Radin – I’d Rather Be With You (5th April)

American singer-songwriter originally from Ohio. This tracks is from his 2nd album ‘Simple Times’, available now. The album was initially refused by his record company, on the grounds that it lacked a big radio hit. Radin founded his own independent label, released it without making any changes at all and it subsequently went to number 1 on the digital downloads chart.

Amplify by Adam Bowie

At Absolute Radio, we’re a massive supporter of sponsorship and promotions. Sponsorship tends to refer to brands that support individual programmes, or elements of programmes, e.g. British Gas sponsors the Christian O’Connell Breakfast Show, while Admiral Insurance is the sponsor of traffic and travel reports on Absolute Radio. Promotions are another name for station competitions brought to you by a particular brand or advertiser.

But while many in the media industry are aware of the enormous benefits there are to had investing in this kind of activity, published data proving its value was something that was in short supply.

We wanted to prove that sponsorship and promotions are indeed superior to spot airtime in many cases, and can work even harder for brands and advertisers.

To demonstrate this, we recently commissioned Entertainment Media Research to conduct a groundbreaking research study examining how listeners respond to sponsorship and promotional activity compared to other types of advertising. We’ve called that research “Amplify,” as the results show how using non-airtime activity positively increase levels of awareness and brand fit.

The research definitively proves those benefits and in particular shows that a very high level of emotional connection can be achieved by that activity.

In other words, we’ve helped prove the value to advertisers of sponsorship and promotions.

Marketing Week, published today, carries a summary of the results, and you can also read a summary of the findings here.

The soon-to-be relaunched Absolute Radio Trade Site will carry further information including a downloable PowerPoint presentation of the results in the very near future.

Although this research was carried out among Absolute Radio listeners, we believe that the results hold true for all commercial radio.
