“The Greatest Show on Earth” – it’s a bold statement from Olympic bosses but that’s what they’re aiming for this time next year when the Games finally come to London.
Today, we got a glimpse of just how much has been achieved since we were awarded the biggest sporting event in the world back in 2005 – and how much there is still to do! Taking the Absolute Radio Breakfast Show down to the shiny new Aquatics centre in (a chilly!) Stratford gave us a chance to peek behind the scenes and interview some of the key figures who are responsible for making the Olympics happen. Russ Williams grilled London Mayor Boris Johnson about what the next year holds for London, chatted to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt about opening the Games early and asked Seb Coe what the athletes will be going through as they fight for their place with Team GB. Check out those videos here:
Absolute Radio has been there from the start and we’ve worked closely with the 2012 team at LOCOG , the Olympic Delivery Authority and London Mayor’s Office to make sure we’re at the heart of the action. There’s been a huge amount of debate about the money spent on the Games, and just what the benefits are, but Absolute Radio supports the ethos of the Olympics, the pride it’s brought to a lot of people, the regeneration of what was wasteland in East London and the planned legacy. Of course the Olympics are not without controversy, but without doubt the majesty of the Games (and the stunning venues) will inspire young people to join their local running club, get back on a bike or even try a new sport.
It’s been a rollercoaster journey since the bid team wept with joy at winning the right to host the Olympics and while the venues are on time and under budget, there’s still some way to go until London’s ready to welcome athletes from across the globe, tens of thousands of journalists and hopefully a million extra tourists! But whatever the next year holds, on the 27th July next year the Olympic flame will be lit and Britain will be part of sporting history.
On top of all of that we now know that Boris Johnson is looking forward to the beach volleyball more than any other event…!
The playlist is out now.

Noel Gallagher – The Death of You and Me (21/08/11)

Hard-Fi – Fire In The House (08/08/11)
New song from the returning Staines band, and the follow-up to ‘Good For Nothing’, this one displays a touch of New Order about it. Hard-Fi’s first album in four years, ‘Killer Sounds’, is released 22nd August.
Blondie – What I Heard (08/08/11)
Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke are back with a new album ‘Panic of Girls’, which has also been made available as a collector’s edition magazine pack featuring articles on the pioneering band’s legacy. This new track is in the classic Blondie style, and has been played as part of the band’s set at their sell-out headline gigs and festival appearances across the UK throughout July.
Absolute Radio have penned a deal with Lloyds TSB, the Official Banking and Insurance partner of the London 2012 Olympic Games to amplify the launch of the ‘One Year to Go’ campaign.
The brands have agreed an exclusive one day on-air promotion in a deal brokered with MEC (Media Agency). The promotion will demonstrate how people can get involved and benefit from Lloyds TSB’s London 2012 Partnership.
On Wednesday July 27th the 12 month countdown to London 2012 will begin. With only one year to go before the Games, Absolute Radio’s Russ Williams will be making his way East to the Stratford Olympics site, where he will be hosting a special London 2012 countdown breakfast show between 6-10am on Absolute Radio.
Whilst broadcasting live from the Olympics site, the show will feature interviews with London Mayor Boris Johnson, Olympic legend Seb Coe, former athlete and Olympic gold medallist Ed Moses amongst other Team GB athletes; drawing on Lloyds TSB’s key messaging throughout.
Lloyds TSB have also organised for the Olympic torch to be delivered to site by one of their local heroes, 17 year old Jordan Dalrymple, an Olympic volleyball hopeful.
