Absolute Radio Digital Digest by Owen Smith

Ladies and Gentlemen of the blogosphere, what’s up?  Once again it’s time to wrap up all the online stories of the week in an easy to consume yet delicious package, otherwise known as the digital digest.  I like to think of it as the ‘pigs in blankets’ of blog posts.  That’s the sausage wrapped in bacon version mind, none of this cheese wrapped in bacon nonsense.  In fact if you ever serve me cheese wrapped in bacon having previously given me the impression that I’m actually going to be presented with proper pigs in blankets, I’m going to tip the dining table over and dunk your face in the gravy bowl.  Let that be a warning to you all.  I am as serious as Sam when it comes to hors d’oeurves.

Anyway, this week online…

Facebook’s IPO, to be issued in the second quarter of 2012, is rumoured to be valued at $100 billion.  That’s £67 billion.  I didn’t even know that sort of money existed.  What on earth does somebody do with that kind of money, apart from obviously buy stock in Facebook?  I can think of a few things, and none of them involve a social network’s shares.  I’d buy a superpower for a start, and by that I don’t mean I’d buy the United States or Russia.  I mean  I would buy a legitimate, Marvel comics, full blown, world saving superpower.  Strap me to a table, and surgically attach Wolverine’s adamantium claws to my knuckles.  I don’t care how painful it is.  I’m rich.  What do you mean it’s not physically possible?  I’m rich.  In fact doctor, pipe down, before I mow you down with a barrage of mind bullets that I had surgically implanted earlier, because I’M RICH.

Failing that, I’d buy Optimus Prime.

Anyway, some legitimate Facebook stats – it’s revenue is set to grow to $4.8 billion this year, with $3.8 billion of that coming from advertising sales alone.  I mean that really is just silly money.  I’m well into my overdraft at the moment.  The Optimus Prime dream is a way off yet.

Other news this week includes YouTube’s makeover (it’s all gone a bit Gok Wan), and the complete non-news that is that next year will see the release of 4G enabled iPads and iPhones.  It’s not as if a new one comes out every year is it?  Also, Spotify is moving into the App domain, in a move “designed to turn Spotify into a platform for a wide array of music-based apps, just as Facebook plays host to hundreds of social games such as Farmville”.

App of the week this week goes to Angry Chickens, for the sheer balls out audacity to so blatantly rip off one of the most well known and successful apps on the planet, and then charge people for the privilege to use it.  Bravo, Angry Chickens.  To be fair, it’s not as if the makers of Angry Birds need the money any more is it?  If you’re looking for a few more Christmas gift ideas, why not try theseOr thisOr maybe even these.

That’s it for another week, I’ll leave you with the most awesome magic trick on the internet (I may have linked this before, but I bloody love it), some impressive parkour (I’m pretty sure I heard something burst), and a kid that really likes yogurt.

Oh and if you’re not scared of Siri yet, it’s time to start panicking.

Remember, she watches you while you sleep.
