Absolute Beginners No Longer. By Chris Lawson

As Mark said, I think everyone behind the scenes worked incredibly hard and it sounded great on air. There is a lot more that we want to do and things to improve definitely, but I thought it was a fantastic start. Most of the comments on the blogs have been positive, there have been some comments about “expecting more for a launch day.” However I think it was great that we let the music, the DJ’s and the listeners take control yesterday. I think we are all clear that the hard work is not over and we have only just begun. There has been some really good feedback, for example, “if it is a no repeat guarantee – don’t keep repeating it, just do it. ” Below is a fantastic quote from one blog which we hear loud and clear.

“The excitement of radio should be that things bubble away and happen without the mechanics of what’s happening being effectively explained on air. I think of it as being like a scenic coach journey – you want the driver to be using the PA system to tell you what great and interesting stuff is outside, you don’t want him telling you every time he changes gear or where the petrol gauge is pointing, do you?”

Christopher England.

That’s what I’m excited by, the opportunity for us to improve and create something amazing, I want us to keep reacting quickly. We launched a new brand in six weeks, think what we can all do in six months?

I know from a marketing perspective there was no abseiling, fireworks, dressing up, balloon rides for the launch of this station, but we do want to try and do things differently.

However saying that, we have finally managed to clear out the last bits and pieces of the “old brand” as you can see below. Doug our new security guard has helped us with that task…

So what about the marketing campaign?

We want as many people as possible to know about Absolute Radio, so the TV campaign will be hitting screens on the 10th October and will run for six weeks. You will get a sneak preview at a screening on the 9th. The last day of filming was this Saturday and it was a lovely sunny day whilst we filmed in Golden Square. It drew quite a crowd and many of them clapped and walked away smiling, I hope that is a good sign.

It will be the biggest campaign for us in a decade and three times the size of the campaign our competitors are running at the moment. I’m really glad that we decided to film it here at One Golden Square, it feels good to have our home as the star of the campaign.

The digital marketing activity will kick in shortly, you can expect to see some great footage on Youtube over the next month or two. I never knew Christian swore so much, or Doug could be so disgusting!

The bus advertising is also running for a couple more weeks. The “Official Bus Spotter Prize” goes to the legendary Kat Knapp who informs me whenever she sees a bus with the ads on – and I mean whenever! I can only presume that we have got the coverage we have paid for, or that they are all circling her house near Streatham 24 hours a day, as I have:

5 text messages
15 emails
4 voicemails
And two restraining orders so far….

It was the “Number 45 to Kings Cross today.” Keep up the good work Kat!

And finally – reception. I think we all loved the look of reception last week. It felt very us and I love the guitars on the wall and the guitars full of sweets. We’re working on it…

29/09/2008 – Day 1 at One Golden Square. By Mark Bingham

Wow, we have ended our ‘crossfade’ journey and it’s day two of being 100% Absolute Radio.

Behind the scenes, the Programming, Production, PR, Marketing, Digital Media and Tech Team have lived at One Golden Square, working day, night and most weekends to make sure we have everything perfect for day one. I feel like I’ve seen Clive Dickens, my new boss, more than my own wife and child for the last few weeks!

But the big question is, has it been worth it?

You bet it has, I wouldn’t have swapped it for the world. To be part of a new national radio station launch is a one in a million chance of a lifetime. If it all ends tomorrow for me, so be it, I was still part of the launch of Absolute Radio. I was there on day one.

But more importantly, do our listeners agree, do they like what’s coming out of the speakers? Have we kept our promise of keeping the things they like, but at the same time, sending them on an audio journey of discovery.

Here’s a selection of emails that we received from our listeners…

Seriously, it’s amazing.
I’m not going to bother with fancy letter-presentation techniques or long-winded intros, there really isn’t any point.
For once, there’s a radio station that plays decent music. No other radio station has played the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, and so many other greats. I, as an oldie-rock lover, have finally found faith in radio again.
If you keep it this way, so, SO many people across the nation will be at your feet. As will many others, because what you’re doing now is *amazing*. (Excuse the poor quality of the vocabulary and the English in general)
So yes, good stuff, please don’t change it! :)
From: Anoushka G

Having originally listened to Virgin at the start and drifted away as the music changed its focus, I’ve got to say what you have been playing in the last few hours has been brilliant. I’ve even downloaded some Elvis Costello, Squeeze and Queen having heard some long forgotten tracks. Keep it like this and I’ll be back for good
From: Simon Smith

Have been so worried that my virgin was going to disappear but if the last few broadcasts have anything to go by….oh thank god my ultimate station. although I have a vast music collection, now I don’t need to stick a cd in…thankyou . thankyouxxxx
From: Clare Ragless

Good Evening all at the new Absolute
Just finding the music exceptional and it’s great hearing all the great classics at work!
Would be great to hear more Genesis, Fleetwood Mac, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, Human League,UB40 The list is endless as you are no doubt aware. Carry on the great work
From: Ian Lawn

We have the radio on all day at work ( Dentons Directories Westbury Wiltshire) and we all commented how much better it is now we don’t have to listen to the same record being played over and over and also having to listen to the same ads again and again…..the music is GREAT
From: Dawn Galey

just wanted to say always listened to VIRGIN ( i’m young 53!) but boy the music that has been played of late ( absolute) is great…all the quality tracks recently played from great artists never played queen, stones, LZ if this is what to come this is the station to listen to!
From: Linda

Hi,
I listened to Absolute for the first time yesterday whilst working from home, deperate for something to keep my mind on track as I cross checked spreadsheets. What a great mix of music, I have a vast range of musical taste (I was that 70’s punk) over far too many years and it was so good to hear an entertaining and (dare I say it) intelligent mix with NO repeats. To quote Paul Weller from yesterday’s playlist – That’s entertainment….

I look forward to listening again (sadly I can’t stream over the web at work here in France!). Thanks again
From: Jill

Thank God! A radio station I actually like that I can pick up on my DAB radio here in the wasteland otherwise known as the West Midlands!

You’re sounding great so far guys.
From: Ali H

Just to let you know i don’t think i need my Ipod anymore. Absolute is fantastic.
From: Angela from Basingstoke

We only have one radio in our little hut and if I’m working in another room I find myself constantly running into the office because “I’m just going to listen to this one”. A lot of work is being neglected here, if our customers start complaining I’m going to refer them straight to Absolute Radio, you’re going to have a lot of explaining to do!
Keep it up guys! :O)

For the first time in my life, I’ve switched off the telly to listen to the radio. Absolutely better than Virgin.
From: Keith, Oakley

When you have feedback like this from your listeners, you must be doing something right.
Here’s to many more great days of Absolute Radio.

Absolute Radio Launch

In case you missed it, here’s the audio from the official launch of Absolute Radio at 7.45am today.

Absolute Radio launch

So, from 7.45 on today we became 100% Absolute, but what does that really mean? By Clive

On the surface, we just rebranded – but because we’re Absolute, we’re trying to do it differently.  These days, everyone talks about branding, but we don’t often really think what it means.  A supermarket can take the same tin of beans, put three different labels on it and charge three different prices because the branding is different.  In their world it seems that it doesn’t matter what the product actually is, but the way that it’s sold.

That’s not what we’re doing here at Absolute – we care about our beans more than the label on the tin.  Which means that we really care about radio, and making this brand & station the best that we can.  There have been lots of meetings where phrases like ‘core brand values’ have been thrown about – but unlike other branding exercises we’re really trying to define who we are, and I want to look at some of the words that came up when we were trying to find Absolute.

‘Honest’.   Donnach, Adrian and I have designed this station to be the most open and honest about what we are doing – and between us, we’ve seen more than a few.  So, honestly, why are we changing the name? Because it allows us to expand in ways that having to tie into someone else’s brand won’t let us.

‘Innovative’.  I’ve often used the phrase ‘always in Beta’ so much that around the office it may have lost some of its meaning.  What it means is that we’re always open to new ideas.  Absolute is available on more formats and platforms than any other radio station. As more technologies become available, then at Absolute, we will try to use them, if it makes the station better and easier to find (Look out for the new Absolute AMP player).  Making the station the best that it can be is our goal, so ‘always in Beta’ also refers to how we play music, structure the schedule and create the sound of the station.  We like to play a game called ‘best idea wins’, and if something works – then we’ll use it.

‘Loyal’.  Although we’re innovative, it doesn’t mean that we’re going to get rid of things that work because they aren’t new.  In his farewell blog, David Lloyd was nice enough to point out that we made him do extra work seeking his expertise in the transition when he could have been slacking off.  David was a tremendous help to me personally.  He helped me understand how this particular station and family works.  We have a great team of people all throughout the building, who rather than fighting against the ‘new regime’ have been embracing the opportunity to improve.  We have great talent, like Christian, Geoff, Ian, Ben, Russ etc, and everything we’re adding in terms of topicality, music, range and style will help to enhance what is already here.

‘Excellent’. I have already stated that I intend for absolute to have more Sony Award winners than any other station (not just commercial) by the end of our first year.  That will be through awards we win, but also by bringing in award winning talented people.

‘Discovery’. This is perhaps our most important word.  Not only are we discovering new ways to make Absolute the best radio station we can, we’re opening up new ways for people to experience and interact with us.  Not least is our massively expanded playlist, which means that people will be constantly discovering new and classic music – even if think they’ve heard everything, then we’ll be playing live performances and session tracks that you can’t hear anywhere else. As soon as people stop discovering at Absolute, then we’ve stopped doing our job properly.  If we can make Absolute a constant source of discovery, for the people listening and the people producing the station output, then we’re headed somewhere very special.

Absolute isn’t a tin of beans, it’s a radio station – and something that I’m very passionate about – (even if it does sometimes make me sound a bit like David Brent – thank you Media Guardian).  And Absolute as a brand isn’t just a new label on a tin – it’s the whole product and a way of thinking.  We’re not pretending to be honest, innovative, loyal, excellent and committed to discovery – we just are!

One Golden Square is a very special place – Absolute-ly!
